چکیده

13.5 Ib indicated a very desirable level of tenderness. A high level of consumer acceptability would be anticipated for meat from these carcasses. An economic evaluation of feedlot performance ofCharolais and Limousin sired steers and heifers is presented in Table 4. Feed costs, overhead costs and carcass sale value were based on prevailing prices for January 7, 1980. Limousin sired steers returned $11.16 more per head above feedlot expense than Charolais sired steers. Conversely, Charolais cross heifers returned $36.98 more per head than Limousin cross heifers. There is no apparent reason for the relatively large differences in feedlot performance and carcass traits between Limousin cross steers and heifers as compared to the Charolais cross steers and heifers. Additional data will be required to clarify these sex differences. Although these Charolais and Limousin bulls were mated to a diverse group of crossbred cows, calves produced were quite uniform in muscling and conformation, performed adequately in the feedlot and yielded very desirable carcasses. These data would suggest that eith.er sire breed could be successfully utilized in a terminal cross mating system. The choice of available bulls within each of these breeds may be as important as the selection of breed to sire the calves.

Techniques for estimation of milk yield in beef cows and relationships of milk yield to calf weight gain and postpartum reproduction.

Milk production is a primary factor controlling weaning weight of beef calves. The purpose of this experiment was to develop a practical and reliable on-farm method of estimating milk production and to relate estimates of milk production and milk composition to preweaning weight gain of calves. A second objective was to relate milk production to postpartum ovarian activity. Milk production of s...

Comparison of calf rearing results and nursing cow performance in various beef breeds managed under the same conditions in north-western Poland

We compared the results of calf maternal nursing and cow performance in 5 beef breeds managed under equal conditions in the region of West Pomerania. The study involved 549 cows and 1 979 calves (1 007 heifers and 972 bulls) of the following breeds: Red Angus, Salers, Hereford, Limousin, and Simmental. The cows and their calves were managed outdoors for one year. Feeding and management systems ...

Breed effects on crossbred cow-calf performance.

Effects of seven breeds of cow's sire and 12 breeds of cow's maternal grandsire on preweaning performance of crossbred cows and their calves were examined in data from two experiments conducted at the Roman L. Hruska U.S. Mean Animal Research Center. Data included 1,836 records over three to five parities for 516 cows by 143 sires and by 307 maternal grandsires. The statistical model fitted eff...

Relationship of milk yield and quality to preweaning gain of calves from Angus, Brahman and reciprocal-cross cows on different forage systems.

Interactions of the regression of preweaning ADG on dam milk yield and quality with breed group and forage environment were evaluated in a two-phase study. Phase I consisted of milk yield and quality and calf gain records from 1989 to 1991 for purebred Angus (n = 64) and Brahman (n = 62) cows mated to sires of both breeds. Phase II consisted of milk yield and quality and calf gain records from ...

Lactation and calf weight traits of mature crossbred cows fed varying daily levels of metabolizable energy.

Our objective was to evaluate differences in lactation traits and calf weights produced by F1 cows under varying daily metabolizable energy availability. Measures of milk yields and calf weight traits were recorded on mature F1 cows. The cows were produced from matings of Angus or Hereford dams with sires representing Angus/Hereford, Shorthorn, Galloway, Longhorn, Nellore, and Salers breeds. Th...
